What’s a Shortcut Key?
In many cases it’s exactly what its name implies:  Pressing one or more keyboard keys to perform the same function as many keystrokes.

Example
You’re writing the next Great American Novel and an often referenced character is John J. Jingleheimer.  To included him in your text you might re-type the 20 character string of letters every time Mr. Jingleheimer makes an appearance, OR, you could simply assign the 20 characters to a key or combination of keys, say ‘CTRL+J’.

Now, each appearance of John would require you to only type CTRL+J, saving 18 keystrokes each time he appears.
