What is a Shortcut Key?
In many cases it’s exactly what its name implies:  Pressing one or more keyboard keys to perform the same function that would ordinarily require  pressing many keystrokes.

Example
You’re writing the next Great American Novel and an often referenced character is John J. Jingleheimer.  To include Mr. Jingleheimer in your text you could re-type his name (a 20 character string of letters) each time Mr. Jingleheimer made an appearance, OR, you could simply assign the 20 characters to a key, or combination of keys, say ‘CTRL+J’.

Now, each appearance of John would require you only to type CTRL+J, saving 18 keystrokes each time he appears in you story.
